There are a number of new fighting games set to be released in the coming months, and I know you as am I are eagerly anticipating their arrival. From long-awaited sequels to popular franchises to quality of life updates or brand-new titles that promise to shake up the genre, there’s no shortage of exciting new games to look forward to.

As with any new fighting game, it’s important to be prepared before jumping into the fray. This means practicing with your favorite characters, learning the game’s mechanics and systems, and staying up-to-date on the latest strategies and tactics. By putting in the time and effort to prepare, you’ll be ready to take on the competition and come out on top.

With that said I have compiled 10 tips to help you win in fighting games.

  • Study and know your character’s strengths and weaknesses. Each character in a fighting game has a unique set of moves and abilities. Understanding what your character is good at and what they struggle with is essential for making good decisions in a match.

  • Understand the game’s mechanics and systems. In order to make informed decisions in a match, you need to know how the game works. This means spending time experimenting with the frame data, hitboxes, combo mechanics and more.

  • Learn your opponent’s character(s) and playstyle. In order to effectively counter your opponent’s strategies, you need to know what they’re capable of and how they like to play. This means paying attention to the moves they use and the decisions they make in a match. With experience you will already know what they are capable of going into the match. Knowing is half the battle and once you know all you have to focus on after that is the player vs player.

  • Keep an eye on the match timer. In fighting games, matches are won by either knocking out the opponent or having more health when the timer runs out. As such, keeping an eye on the timer and understanding how it affects your strategy can be crucial for success.

  • Establish and use mind games to your advantage. In a fighting game, psychological factors can be just as important as mechanical ones. Use mental tactics to throw off your opponent and gain an advantage in a match.

  • Don’t be afraid to take risks. In a fighting game, sometimes the best way to win is to be unpredictable and take risks. This means using moves and tactics that your opponent might not expect, and being willing to go on the offensive even if it means exposing yourself to counterattacks.

  • Mix up your moves and how you respond to the situations that occur in the match. In a fighting game, repeating the same moves and over and over can make you predictable and easy to counter. By mixing it up, you can keep your opponent guessing and maintain the upper hand in a match.

  • Pay attention to the stage and its hazards including being locked in the corner or at a wall. In many fighting games, the stage itself can play a big role in a match. By understanding where you and your opponent are standing and the layout of the stage can be used to your advantage. You can gain a significant edge in a match by staying aware to your surroundings.

  • Don’t get too aggressive. While it’s important to be aggressive in a fighting game, it’s also important to know when to back off. If you’re too aggressive, you can leave yourself open to counterattacks and get knocked out quickly. By being strategic and calculated with your aggression, you can maintain the upper hand in a match.

  • Practice, practice, practice. As with any skill, the key to success in a fighting game is practice. By playing regularly and experimenting with different strategies and tactics, you can improve your skills and become a better player.
